5 ways to create more space in your home

COLIN MARSTON • Feb 13, 2023

As our lives get busier and more expensive, up-sizing our homes is becoming less of an option to most of us. It has therefore never been more important to make the most of the space we already have.

From a practical point of view, or if you are simply yearning for a beautiful spacious place to relax after a busy day, we have put together a list of the 5 best ways to maximise your living space.

1.   Invest in Good Storage Solutions

Forget clunky ugly plastic storage boxes, there’s a whole world of beautiful, functional, and innovative storage solutions out there that will make a huge difference to your home. The key is to really evaluate what will work in your home; what wall space you have, what floor space you have, and what final look you are going for. Some storage solutions can be beautiful furniture pieces in themselves, and some are clever at magically hiding themselves and everything in them away for a stylishly minimal look.

2.   If You Can Go Open Plan… Do It!

Lots of doors and walls will make your living space feel crowded and cramped. A good architect or property renovations company will be able to provide lots of advice on which walls are easiest to remove, and which doors are simply not needed. You may be surprised at how easy it is to create an open plan living space, especially if most of your walls are non-supporting.

Opening up your rooms will provide much bigger wall space, allowing for larger storage solutions, or left as simplistic as possible will create a dramatic illusion of a space larger than it really is.

3.   Don’t Forget Your Walls

Hang wall-mounted décor, such as paintings, posters, or shelves, to keep floor space clear.

Remember to think creatively when it comes to installing shelves in unusual places: look for unusual places, such as in the space above doors or along the sides of cabinets, to maximize storage space.

Hang pots and pans: Hang pots and pans on a wall-mounted pot rack to free up cabinet space.

Use hooks: Use hooks to hang items, such as bags, hats, and jackets, that would otherwise take up valuable floor or counter space.

4.   Mirrors are Your Friend

If you can’t physically create more space, then another option is to fake it!

The clever placing of mirrors can instantly make a small room appear larger by reflecting light and creating an illusion of more space. Consider using mirrors in small rooms or narrow hallways to really maximize the illusion of space, as well as creating additional mood-boosting light.

5.   Have a Regular Clear Out

No matter how much space you have, clutter will always make you feel like you have less! A clear room creates a clear mind, so this one classes as a double whammy of benefits.

We suggest one BIG clear out at least once a year, and if you’re feeling particularly energetic, a smaller one halfway through.

Pop it on the family calendar, get the kids involved, hire a mini skip and/ or arrange a local charity collection to really get you motivated, and the golden rule of all… BE RUTHLESS!

By the end of it you will be surprised how much extra space suddenly have! (and extra cash if you can bear the eBay process)

There’s also nothing like a big drop off at your local charity shop to make you feel all warm & fuzzy!
